Here are some helpful hints and safety tips to keep in mind when choosing, using, storing, or disposing of HHW:
- Consider less-toxic alternatives. Common products like baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice can be used for a variety of household cleaning projects. Check the internet for ideas and recipes.
- Buy only what you need. Share leftovers with friends and neighbors, but use caution. Some pesticides deteriorate over time and can become even more toxic.
- Keep products in their original containers. Remember: never, ever mix products !
- Properly store all hazardous waste. Keep away from children and animals. Find the nearest facility that will accept hazardous waste and ask what their requirements are. When transporting to the acceptable facility for disposal, put the product in your trunk or pickup bed. Load the vehicle just before leaving to minimize the buildup of fumes.
More About Oil & Filter Recycling….
Oil doesn’t wear out, it just gets dirty! Oil is a renewable resource that can be re-refined into a clean, reusable product. This helps decrease our dependency on foreign oil and helps the environment, too. If you change your own oil, do it right! Locations with the “Recycle Used Oil” sign may take the used oil. To find locations near you, go to www.earth911.org. Don’t forget to ask if they take the filter—filters can be recycled, too.
