On Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at 1:50 a.m. the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call froman individual who said they could hear an argument and a man yell, “kill him.” The caller then heard a gunshot. The caller reported this occurred in the 100 block of North Primrose outside of the city of Maricopa. The caller disconnected and did not provide a name and requested no further contact.

Deputies arrived in the area within minutes of the call being received. They found a gate to a residential yard mangled in the street. They checked the residence and observed the back door had been pried open. Deputies checked the residence for any additional victims but did not find anybody inside.

A short time later, deputies were notified that Juan Carlos Garcia (age 33) had just arrived at Casa Grande Regional Hospital with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Garcia was then transported by air ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix.

Deputies spoke briefly with Garcia before he was taken into surgery. Garcia said he heard noises outside of his residence and he went to see who it was. He was confronted by a Hispanic male who was attempting to steal his ATV. The suspect then shot Garcia and stole his truck. As the suspect was leaving the residence, he drove the truck through Garcia’s locked gate.

At the scene, deputies located the magazine of a handgun and also the wad (piece of plastic separating the powder from the pellets) from an expended shotgun shell.

PCSO Person and Property Crime Detectives responded to the scene and took over the investigation. Initially Garcia’s family who lived next door denied knowing him. Garcia was taken to the hospital by his nephew who also lived next door. The nephew admitted he saw responding deputies while driving to the hospital but never tried to flag anyone down for help.

An attempt to locate was put out to law enforcement agencies for the stolen truck. The truck was found abandoned on the Ak-Chin Indian Reservation. The vehicle was processed for evidence and then taken to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Evidence Impound Yard.

Sheriff Paul Babeu stated, “Garcia is a prohibited possessor and has been deported numerous times from the United States back to Mexico. The backdoor to his residence was pried open which was one of many things which were not consistent with what detectives were being told. A search warrant was granted for the residence and inside detectives seized guns, stolen electronics, marijuana, methamphetamines, and documents supporting identity theft and money laundering. The stolen property recovered was valued at over $10,000 and was traced back to 7 residential burglaries in Hidden Valley.”

On Friday, November 29th, detectives were notified Garcia was going to be released from the hospital. Detectives met Garcia at the hospital; he was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Jail for Misconduct Involving Weapons. PCSO Property Crimes Unit will be requesting additional charges for the other crimes as the investigation continues.

PCSO is still trying to determine who the suspect is that shot Garcia and what the motive was. If anybody has any information they are asked to call 520-866-5111.
