1st Degree Murder, Attempted Murder and Aggravated Assault
When deputies arrived on scene, they observed a female (age 63) who was later identified as the victim’s sister in the front yard with numerous stab wounds.

They observed a male subject standing over another male subject who was lying on the ground covered in blood. The male subject on the ground was later identified as Joseph Cain Cecil (age 38). Joseph was taken into custody and later transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries he sustained after a neighbor struck him several times with a shovel in an attempt to stop him from stabbing the victims. The male standing over him was a neighbor who had ran over to stop him.

Inside of the residence, deputies found another female who was later identified as Ronna Thomas (age 65). Thomas had multiple stab wounds and was lying on the floor.

Deputies provided initial medical treatment to both victims but were relieved of those duties when medical personnel arrived on scene.

Ronna was transported to Casa Grande Regional Medical Center and her sister was transported by air ambulance to Phoenix area hospital.

PCSO Homicide Detectives responded to the scene and took over the investigation.

Sheriff Paul Babeu stated, “Ms. Ronna Thomas was pronounced deceased at the hospital as a result of her injuries. Her sister is in stable condition. Had it not been for the intervention of the neighbor who stopped the attack, we would have undoubtedly had another homicide victim. When homicide detectives asked Joseph Cecil why he stabbed the two victims he told them ‘God told me to do it.’ ”

Joseph Cain Cecil was booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center for 1st Degree Murder, Attempted Murder and Aggravated Assault.
