Pinal County’s fleet consists of more than 800 light-duty vehicles and about 250 heavy-duty vehicles. None of these vehicles is configured to use alternative fuel because of a lack of infrastructure – namely a lack of fueling stations – has limited the County’s ability to purchase and use such vehicles.

Beginning in 2007, the County began purchasing flex-fuel light-duty vehicles configured to burn E-85 (85% ethanol/methanol) but there are still no in-county sources of this fuel blend.

Only ultra low sulfur diesel fuel is purchased for use by Pinal County heavy-equipment.

Currently, Pinal County purchases heavy equipment meeting Tier 3 emission standards and will begin purchasing equipment meeting the Tier 4 standard as those vehicles become available.
