History is disappearing.
The second Pinal County Court House was completed in 1891 with "...the conviction
that an imposing public facility would reflect confidence in the continuing growth
of the county." It has taken over 100 years and we are just beginning to see the
fruition of this dream.
But time and Mother Nature have not been kind to our beloved courthouse. Deterioration
of the building’s exterior has left the interior exposed to all the elements. Roofs
are leaking, ceilings are falling, and floors are warping. Bats and pigeons now
occupy the attic space, leaving behind a filth of debris. The problems have advanced
far beyond the control of normal maintenance. It is estimated that it will cost
$4 million to make the building safe for future generations to enjoy and appreciate.
This crisis however, comes at a most opportune time.
- There is an increase in public interest in restoring the building, along with equal
interests from various governmental entities.
- There is the potential for funding through intergovernmental agreements.
- There are enthusiastic people with creative ideas willing to participate.
- Our country is experiencing a time of appreciation for historic value and patriotism.
Together these conditions may generate the vehicle with which
to bring this building back to represent the pride, hopes, and dreams of our forefathers.
At this point, we already have been able to stabilize and repair the building’s
clock tower, which had become a safety hazard. We are now working on plans to repair
the rest of the roof. Once the roof is fixed, we will begin to assess exterior structural
needs.
This
form is part of the effort to help with repairs to the building.
The Second Pinal County Courthouse Brick Paver Project allows private citizens to
buy an engraved brick that will be placed
on the sidewalk in front of the courthouse. The tax deductible donation to the project
will be used to help pay for repairs to the building. You may inscribe a name or
a phrase on every brick that you purchase and it will be placed on the walkway as
a tribute to your generosity and desire to save this historic building.
We would very much appreciate it if you would purchase
a brick ($50 each) and write a message to be engraved on it, following the
guidelines on the form. If you have any questions regarding this project, please
call Ernie Feliz, Pinal County Grants Coordinator at (520) 866-7221 or write to
ernie.feliz@pinalcountyaz.gov. Thank
you very much for your help in saving the 1891 Second Pinal County Courthouse.
