The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has completed a multi-year study to update the City’s flood hazard maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs). These new flood hazard maps will become effective on June 16, 2014 and are important tools used in the effort to reduce the risk of future flooding in the City of Maricopa.

This is a significant accomplishment as it marks the first time in over 30 years that a detailed study of the City’s flood zones has been conducted. Since that time, drainage patterns have changed due to land development, surface erosion and other natural forces. As a result, the likelihood of flooding in some areas has increased significantly. Moreover, the technology used to estimate flooding has been much improved. Up-to-date maps will more accurately represent the risk of flooding and will provide residents and business owners with the most current, reliable data about the flood hazards they face; therefore, helping them make more informed decisions about insuring and protecting their property against floods.
