News: Motorcyclist Crashes at 157 Miles Per Hour in San Tan Valley

On December 19th, 2010 at 2:05 a.m. a Pinal County Sheriff’s Deputy was traveling northbound on Gantzel Road near Pecan Creek Drive, San Tan Valley. The deputy observed a motorcycle traveling southbound at an extremely high rate of speed. The deputy used his radar unit and clocked the motorcycle at 157 mph in a 45 mph zone. Before any patrol deputy could get near the motorcyclist, he crashed into a traffic signal pole at the intersection of 36630 North Gantzel Road.

The driver of the motorcycle was Noe Marcos Colazo (age 19 of Tempe). Calazo suffered extensive injuries as a result of the collision. He was transported by air ambulance to Scottsdale Osborn Hospital in extremely critical condition.

The investigation revealed Calazo had lost control of the 2004 Yamaha YFR motorcycle he was riding when he was unable to navigate the gradual turn in the roadway. He drove 348 feet through the dirt shoulder before he collided with the concrete base of the traffic signal pole. The motorcycle then flew through the air for another 18 feet before colliding with a wooden SRP pole. The motorcycle was nearly disintegrated on impact and Calazo flew an additional 104 feet through the air before striking the ground.

Pending his release from the hospital, Calazo will face Aggravated DUI charges (his AZ Driver’s License is currently revoked), Reckless Driving and Criminal Speed.
