In August 2007, Det. Hughey, who was then a patrol deputy in the area of San Manuel, responded to a domestic disturbance. As he was arriving, the female involved in the call drove away from responding deputies. After a short pursuit leading back to the original scene, the female stopped the vehicle and Det. Hughey approached. He very quickly assessed the situation and determined the female was injured. She had shot herself in the neck with a small rifle and was bleeding profusely from the wound. Det. Hughey covered the wound with his hand to get the bleeding under control until the paramedics could arrive. This person’s life was saved due to Det. Hughey’s quick action because she would have bled to death unassisted.
