In August 2007, Deputies Goode and Avilez responded to a residence that had been flooded by natural gas in a suicide attempt. The deputies could smell the gas as they attempted to gain entry; they had to be careful because the gas could have been ignited by a spark of any type. A woman inside the home was unconscious and the deputies were able to get her through a window and carry her to awaiting paramedics. The paramedics reported that the woman would have died within minutes had not the deputies removed her when they did.

On August 8, 2001, Sgt. Hausman and Cpl. Vargas were traveling southbound on State Route 79 when they saw a plume of black smoke. As they drove to the smoke, they saw a vehicle engulfed in flames alongside the roadway. Sgt. Hausman and Cpl. Vargas ran to the burning vehicle and found two paraplegic females trapped inside. They reached into the burning vehicle and pulled both females, who otherwise would have had no avenue to escape from the vehicle, to safety. Thus Sgt. Hausman and Cpl. Vargas saved the women’s lives by placing themselves in grave danger and pulling the women from the blazing vehicle. | 7/6/2005 | 7/6/2005 | | Medal of Valor

In August 2007, Det. Hughey, who was then a patrol deputy in the area of San Manuel, responded to a domestic disturbance. As he was arriving, the female involved in the call drove away from responding deputies. After a short pursuit leading back to the original scene, the female stopped the vehicle and Det. Hughey approached. He very quickly assessed the situation and determined the female was injured. She had shot herself in the neck with a small rifle and was bleeding profusely from the wound. Det. Hughey covered the wound with his hand to get the bleeding under control until the paramedics could arrive. This person’s life was saved due to Det. Hughey’s quick action because she would have bled to death unassisted. | 3/26/2008 | 3/26/2008 | | Distinguished Service Medal
