Chief Deputy Altman has over 35 years correctional/management experience working in both the Military and Civilian Corrections system. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1990, where he held the position of Military Police Sergeant Major. After serving 20 years, and working all aspects of Military Corrections and Law Enforcement, he began his civilian corrections career at the entry level with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in Brevard County Florida. While in Brevard County, Chief Altman held all leadership positions within the agency and was the Deputy Commander or Commander of the facility from 2001-2005. The Brevard County Jail was a 1041 bed facility with an average population of 1300 + daily.
Due to the expansion of the Pinal County Corrections system, Chief Deputy Altman was recruited and assumed duties on April 6, 2005. Chief Altman has worked with both nationally and internationally known correctional consultants on correctional issues ranging from staffing analysis to criminal justice system needs analysis.
Chief Altman holds a BS in Public Administration from the University of Central Florida, Orlando and is a graduate of the Command Officer Development Course, Southern Police Institute, University of Louisville, Louisville, Ky.; and the National Institute of Corrections, Executive Excellence program, as well as numerous other schools relating to correctional philosophy, security and management.
As the Chief Deputy for Detention, Chief Altman is responsible for the daily operation including planning, directing and coordinating all activities for the Pinal County Adult Detention Facility with a current bed capacity of 1504 and an average daily population of 1200 inmates. He is responsible for the indirect supervision of all detention and support staff including preparation and management of the Detention Centers’ budget.
Current memberships include the American Correctional Association; the American Jail Association; and the Arizona Detention Association.
