 Be Responsible, Save The Environment

Here are some helpful hints and safety tips to keep in mind.

When choosing, using, storing, or disposing of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW):

  • Consider less-toxic alternatives. Common products like baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice can be used for a variety of household cleaning projects. Check the internet for ideas and recipes.
  • Buy only what you need. Share leftovers with friends and neighbors, but use caution. Some pesticides deteriorate over time and can become even more toxic.
  • Keep products in their original containers. Remember: never, ever mix products !
  • Properly store all hazardous waste. Keep away from children and animals. Find the nearest facility that will accept hazardous waste and ask what their requirements are. When transporting to the acceptable facility for disposal, put the product in your trunk or pickup bed. Load the vehicle just before leaving to minimize the buildup of fumes.

Disposing of left over paint and materials - Paint Hardener must be added to paint before it will be accepted at a landfill. A paint hardener offers the environmentally safe alternative. Most landfills do not accept latex paint in a liquid form, so save yourself time and money by simply adding a paint hardener to your paint before disposing of it. Check with your local Paint & Hardware store for availability of this product or read more on the paint hardeners and how to properly dispose of paint at Squidoo.com.

More About Oil & Filter Recycling - Oil doesn’t wear out, it just gets dirty! Oil is a renewable resource that can be re-refined into a clean, reusable product. This helps decrease our dependency on foreign oil and helps the environment, too. If you change your own oil, do it right! Locations with the “Recycle Used Oil” sign may take the used oil. To learn more about used motor oil collection and recycling locations near you, go to www.recycleoil.com . Don’t forget to ask if they take the filter—filters can be recycled, too.

Battery Recycling - Every year, the portable rechargeable power industry produces millions of rechargeable battery packs to power products like cordless tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, digital cameral, two-way radios, camcorders, and remote control toys. Find out more about recycling your old rechargeable batteries, used cell phones, and baattery packs at Call2Recycle.

Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) is a non-profit organization which promotes recycling of portable rechargeable batteries and old cell phones. RBRC recycles the following battery chemistries: Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Small Sealed Lead* (PB). Check out RBRC's wesite to find your nearest drop off site.
