Utility Relocation Along Hunt Highway May Cause Slight Delays

FLORENCE, AZ – The Pinal County Public Works Department is working with utility officials to relocate underground infrastructure in advance of improvements to Hunt Highway. Mesa Gas will be moving its underground gas lines along the portion of Hunt Highway that extends from Village Lane northwest to Mountain Vista Boulevard.

Crews are slated to begin work on Monday, July 8. The work will take place primarily on the shoulder of Hunt Highway but some work will temporarily interrupt the Village Lane intersection for a short period of time on July 8 and 9. The utility relocation project should take six to eight weeks, weather permitting.

Public Works crews ask local residents to watch for heavy maintenance equipment and utility crews working throughout the project area. Motorists are urged to exercise caution while paying close attention to warning signs and the instructions of workers in the area.

Pinal County has been acquiring rights-of-way and working with utilities to relocate power, gas and water lines in preparation for the multi-phase widening of Hunt Highway. The Arizona Department of Transportation recently published notice of the bidding process for a 1.8 mile portion of the Hunt Highway improvement project extending from Empire Road to just east of Thompson Road.

Bids will be opened July 12 with the selected bidder to be approved at the State Transportation Board in September. Depending on weather and design considerations, work could begin in the November time frame. The project will consist of drainage improvements including four box culverts, construction of two pipe culverts, road widening, median work and other safety improvements.

“I am grateful for the teamwork that is taking place between the utilities and our Public Works staff so the Hunt Highway improvements can move forward,” said Supervisor Cheryl Chase. “I said in my campaign that Hunt Highway is a priority for my district and I intend to deliver on my promises of a better, safer roadway.”
